Areas of Expertise

Overall Mental Health

Just as it’s possible to be struggling/languishing with no diagnosed mental illness, it’s also possible to thrive with a mental illness. Most often, our overall mental health can be improved, and counselling can be a gift on the journey.

Bipolar

Bipolar refers to extreme changes in moods: the extreme highs and lows. When feeling happy there is a manic mood that occurs and when feeling sad there is a depressive mood. Moods are episodic in nature. The feeling of extreme sadness will come either for a long or short period of time, there will be a recovery period of time and the cycle will begin again with another mood.

Anger

Anger is an instinctual emotion we feel when we come up against the futilities we face in life. Futilities refer to the things in life that happen which we cannot change (such as loss of a relationship or moving). Due to this instinctual nature, it makes sense that anger can vary with its intensity depending on the life situation.

Anxiety

Throughout the last decade anxiety has been on the rise. Presently anxiety is the most prevalent mental health issue we face. One in five people struggle with anxiety across the developmental span: children, adolescents and adults. Unfortunately many people suffer in silence.

Depression

We all feel sad at different times in our lives. Major depression is when sadness negatively impacts life for a long period of time. People struggling with depression feel a sense of severe despair like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Major depression impacts every aspect of life: physical, emotional, relational, work and spiritual.

Grief & Loss

Grief is the experience of loss. Most often grief is connected to the loss of a loved one and yet there can be many other experiences of loss in our lives. Some of these can include loss of a job, home, relationship and health. People respond to grief in a variety of ways with different thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

Eating Disorder

Everyday we are surrounding by diverse media messages that can harmfully impact the way we feel about our bodies. Research has stated that half the girls in grade six do not like the way they look and girls in grade three already desire changes with their body. For some poor body image can lead to a serious problem:  eating disorder.

Addictions

& Substance Abuse

Addictions and Substance Abuse are terms used for people who regularly use alcohol or drugs and are periodically and chronically intoxicated. The alcohol or drugs can negatively impact people’s lives yet some are unaware that their behaviour is out of control.

Trauma

Trauma refers to a deeply disturbing or distressing event. A traumatic event, either singular or multiple, can completely overwhelm an individual’s ability to understand and address the event. A psychological emotional trauma impacts an individual’s clarity of thoughts and feelings regarding the trauma.

Stress

Being “stressed out” has almost become commonplace for us living in North America. At times stress can help you perform better and even keep you safe from danger. However, when stress becomes too much for people it can negatively impact their physical and mental health.

Life Transitions

Throughout our life we go through many transitions. Depending on the type of transition, it can be smooth and exciting or it can be intense and stressful.
